Best part of this game: they give a reason why you're starting off with nothing from Legends 1. That isn't to say the rest of the game is bad; it's just that most games forget this little tidbit, detracting from games' continuity.

As for the rest, the game moves at a fairly quick pace, going from island to island with a simple common quest on each: Get to the center to find what you're looking for. For the first couple of dungeons, this is a lost family member. For the main part of the game, this is a Key that enables you to find the 'Mother Lode' but ends up finding the 'Mother Ship' Elysium. Once there, you again head towards the center, but your objective has changed from finding Roll's family to saving the planet.

Mega Man and his adoptive family are diggers. After their ship crash lands on Kattelox Island, they find pirates threatening to attack the island in search of clues pertaining to the Mother Lode - a legendary refractor said to give unlimited energy. Naturally, Mega Man makes it his business to thrwart the pirates and solve the mystery of a disaster that's rumored to strike the island.

When everybody was clamoring for a Mega Man game on the Playstation, this isn't quite what we were expecting. This isn't a typcial side-scrolling "run and gun" Mega Man fare. It's actually a 3D hybrid of action, platforming, and even some light RPG elements. You explore a large interconnected series of ruins below the island looking for treasure, fight off the pirates in spectacular boss fights, and search for clues about the Mother Lode and this supposed disaster.

It's quite a good game. Finding all the secrets in the ruins is fun, the story is entertaining even if the voice acting is atrocious , and there are plenty of weapons and other upgrades to find. It's far from perfect; the graphics are somewhat ugly, the music is a mixed bag at best, and the controls make combat clunkier than it has to be.

Overall, it's not bad, but only dedicated Mega Man fans will probably "dig" this one. Quite possibly the most derivative Mega Man title ever, Legends introduced us to a world covered by endless water, in which the most common way of earning a living is by exploring underground tunnels. This exploration becomes an important part of the game, with all of the Sub-Gates on the island being linked by such tunnels.

The 3D gameplay really works unlike the later Mega Man X7 , and the story is beautiful. This game really does not get the respect it deserves. In my opionion, the Megaman Legends series is onew of the best video game series ever.
